How to play as Pyro

The Pyro in Team Fortress 2 is a close-range combat specialist known for ambush tactics, area denial, and support through their weaponry. Pyro's playstyle focuses on getting up close to enemies, controlling the battlefield with flames and airblast, and using their unique utility to support the team in unexpected ways.
Pyro’s main weapon is a flamethrower that deals consistent damage at close range and applies afterburn (fire damage over time). It’s not about burst damage, but about staying on enemies and forcing them to retreat—especially classes like Spies or Scouts, who rely on stealth or speed.
The flamethrower also has a unique secondary ability known as airblast, which uses ammo to reflect projectiles like rockets and grenades, push enemies away, and extinguish burning teammates. This makes Pyro a jack-of-all-trades but a master of none—able to switch between offense, defense, or support at any moment.
Pyro struggles in long-range fights due to the short reach of the flamethrower. Open areas or sniper lanes are particularly dangerous. Pyro also relies heavily on positioning—if seen from a distance, they're easy to shut down before closing the gap. Because of this, Pyros should stay hidden and use flank routes to surprise enemies; the less time the enemy sees you, the better.
Pyro’s playstyle is high-risk, high-reward, with an emphasis on surprise, positioning, and utility. When played well, Pyro is a disruptive force that shuts down pushes, protects teammates, and hunts down vulnerable enemies with relentless firepower.
